Singapore streets a new challenge for Canadian BMX rider Creighton.
Canadian BMX rider Steven Creighton found out just two weeks
ago that he would compete in the cycling combined mixed team
event in Singapore, but he hopes to make the most of his chance.
Canada's original nominated rider for the BMX event was
Tory Nyhaug-Heinonen, but Nyhaug-Heinonen ruptured his
spleen while training at the UCI BMX World Championships
in South Africa.
Creighton was also competing for Canada at the July 29-August
1 event in Pietermaritzburg, and knew immediately after Nyhaug-
Heinonen's crash that he would be heading to Singapore instead.
The British Columbia resident said Nyhaug-
Heinonen's accident wasn't a distraction, and while he focused
on the elite junior men's race at the worlds, he was disappointed
when he crashed in qualifying.
The 18-year-old plans to make amends in Singapore.
"I just know that I can do a lot better," Creighton said.
Creighton's greatest challenge at Singapore 2010 may be the
city's streets. In the combined team event, each rider must tackle
their own discpline and the road. Creighton met the qualification
criteria for Singapore by riding in one road race, but that race, at
a local club at Vancouver's University of British Columbia campus
two months ago, was the only one he's competed in.
"There are a lot of BMXers like me who
haven't done any (road) training," he said.
Creighton has previously competed in four BMX world championships,
and he rides for the local BMX club in his hometown of Nanaimo, on
Vancouver Island. He finished school this year, and hopes to compete
at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
