*** Intense/Phantom/On-Trac Great Northwest National Race Report***
Pasco, Washington -- 03/12/2007
A handful of Intense/Phantom/On-Trac riders made their way
up to the beautiful Great Columbia Basin, wine country and the
ABA’s Great Northwest National in Pasco.
As always, the Pasco crowds were as enthusiastic and festive as
a local race dominated by 7 and 8 novices! With the stands all on
one side of the arena, the crowd energy was channeled together
and contagious. There was lots of screaming, lots of cheering and
some really great racing in the TRAC arena, where Idaho replaced
incumbent Tuscon as the most vocal geographic cheering section.
When the last gate dropped on Sunday, the On-Trac team left town
with some great individual performances, lots of hardware, two Factory
team wins and one particularly HUGE team score!
The lovely ladies of On-Trac did their usual job of representing well.
Fireball Kristen Long is really coming into her own and she showed
it this weekend. She was unstoppable blasting out of the gate and
pretty much owning whatever real estate she wanted on her way to
a fine double-double in 9-10 Mixed Open and 10 Girl.
Dominique Daniels scored well, but faced more comp than usual
coming away from the weekend with a 1st and 2nd in 14 Girls and
a 2nd and 1st in 14-16 Cruiser. Look for a tough fight from her in
Phoenix in two weeks on her home turf! Shelbi Long had a good
weekend and is working hard to recover her season ending form
from last year. She managed a 1st and 2nd in 15 Girls, pulling off
a ridiculous first turn swoop on Saturday that would make any parent
or rider proud. She also managed a 2nd in 14-16 Cruiser Sunday.
Rusty “Razzleberry” Nezvig enjoyed a birthday celebration at Outback
Steakhouse Friday night and had his first taste of 13X Saturday morning.
He devoured the first day of 13X competition the same way he inhaled
his steak Friday night – in one big bite. From the gate on, wire-to-wire
Rusty owned the class winning 13/14 Open easily Saturday and Sunday
and dominating 13X Saturday. He got a late gate Sunday and ended up
on the ground in turn two Sunday trying to regain the lead, but not to
worry, he’ll be back strong in Phoenix in two weeks. Not to worry unless
you’re a 13X, that is! The charming and mischievous Fernie Jaquez made
the journey north and Fernie pulled off a pair of 2nds in 13-14 Open and a
3rd in 14X.
Connor Fields firmly established himself as a top gun this weekend
beating some really tough comp double-doubling in 14X and 14 Cruiser
pulling two huge wins in class with 31 riders! Apparently doing a lot of
sprints and training is paying off for the Conman! Kyle Murphy had
himself a good outing this weekend too nabbing a 2nd in 15X Saturday
and snaking the win on Sunday.
The Murph-Dog is riding really good right now and also pulled off a 2nd
in 15-16 Open Saturday. Another rider who looks hard to beat this year
is Jake “Pumpkin Head” Peebles. With his solid gate and efficient pedal
stroke, this guy just pops, pulls and proceeds to leave his comp in the
dust winning his races wire-to-wire. Jake pulls off a fine double-double
of his own in 16X and 15-16 Open, while his Mom manages to keep up
with his two younger brothers admirably!
The “King of Open”, Nic Long is recovering from a bad shoulder injury
resulting from a hard fall in Boulder City a few weeks ago. Nic’s pain
tolerance is as amazing as his Dad and TM Donavon’s intolerance of
excuses. Nic gritted the weekend out, survived a snapped chain Sunday
morning and yet ANOTHER digger on his hurt shoulder and totally proved
that mind over matter really works. Nic nails two BIG wins in 17/18X and
of course, keeps his regal title as King of Open, winning 17 and over
Open both days.
And as always, we end with our man from blue-turf land, Matt Baisley.
Matt is riding exceptionally well right now almost as if his Dad is
threatening to send him on factory and barber shop tours in China
for a while! Matt wins both days easily in 17-20 Cruiser and dominated
all his early rounds in 19-27X, suffering bad luck in both mains. Keep an
eye on this young man… he’s up and coming!
The ABA ran a fantastic, delay-free event and got 160 + motos in and
out of the TRAC arena by lunchtime Sunday. Intense/Phantom/On-Trac
wins both days including a MONSTER score of 232 on Saturday.
